Information

"Ireland Dubs" is an ongoing dubwise series in which we pay tribute to one of our favourite music genres: Irish folk music. The series is presented in episodic and/or seasonal form.

In this first season we present 4 remixes of traditional Irish folk songs. All remixes come with (at least) one additional dub version.

The first episode presents us one of the most beautiful melodies ever imagined: "Miss MacDermott", composed by an Irish harpist called Turlough O’Carolan around the year 1725. Our version is in G major instead of AB major and shortened the name by an "a".

The second episode introduces us to Sleepy Maggie. Nothing is known about her, except that she apparently wasn't overly awake. The original song is an Irish reel from hundreds of years ago. There is also another, similar song called "Drowsy Maggie". And now Maggie is also dubby.

The third episode reels it up at Cooley's. Well, not really. As cool as it would be if the song's title would refer to some legendary Irish pub, it is actually named after accordion player Joe Cooley who played this reel so much that it became connected to his name. The original name of the song is "Luttrell’s Pass" and was written by Galway-based accordionist Joe Mills, probably in the 1930s.

The fourth episode was a bit difficult to create as the original song "The Maid Who Sold Her Barley" has a 6/8 beat. After some experimenting on changing it to a 4/4, the remix remained in 6/8, which maybe makes this song the first 6/8 dub tune in history? Whether or not, the song is a whimsical riddim with the snaredrum hitting on the 4 and the chords mostly being on-beat while the bassline is doing its own crazy thing. The original song is an Irish jig from around the 16th century and it's about a maid who is going to town in order to sell her barley. The potential buyer then doesn't just want to buy her barley, but also her. Depending on the version, either just for one night or to marry first and then make a baby with her. For our remix, it doesn't matter, as it's just an instrumental version without lyrics.

Two additional dub versions come as "outtakes" aka "bonus tracks".
